UPU

Universal Postal Union

The Universal Postal Union (UPU) became a specialised agency of the United Nations in 1948 to assist the postal sector in its 189 member countries world-wide in improving and developing their postal services. In 1991, six UPU Regional Adviser offices were set up to strengthen the role of UPU in the field. Two of these cover the Asian and Pacific region, one located in Jakarta and the other in Bangkok.

In 2000 UPU assisted the Thai government in preparing for its postal reform and for the separation of the Communications Authority of Thailand (CAT) into the Thailand Postal Service and CT Telecom. UPU also continued to promote the need for effective training by providing management skills training in Thailand and abroad for Thai postal officials. It also co-organised, with ILO, a regional seminar on Social Dialogue in Postal Services.
