As the main advocate for global action on HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS leads, strengthens and supports an expanded response aimed at preventing the transmission of HIV, providing care and support, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS, and alleviating the impact of the epidemic.

Regional Activities

UNAIDS Asia-Pacific Inter-country Team (APICT) organised and supported activities to strengthen and consolidate broad-based regional co-operation on HIV/AIDS. They provided regional action in support of national responses to HIV/AIDS and promoted the need for a consensus on priority areas

 

ACTIVITY

RESULT

Hua Hin Regional consultation between UN agencies, national HIV/AIDS programs, international development agency donors and NGOs.

Reached a consensus on priority areas, where regional action can help support national HIV/AIDS programming.

First meeting of the regional Co-ordination Meeting (RCM) Thematic-Working Group on HIV/AIDS.

Discussed co-ordination activities for UN agencies in priority areas relating to HIV/AIDS.

Regional advocacy workshop on the prevention of drug use and HIV/AIDS in Asia and the Pacific for senior personnel of drug control and public health agencies.  (Jointly organised with ESCAP and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board.

Participants adopted a set of principles and strategic approaches for the prevention of the transmission of HIV among drug users.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Thailand Activities

UNAIDS Thailand has been active in eliminating AIDS-related stigma, and enhancing prevention through community based approaches whereby networks of people living with HIV/AIDS actively participated. It also implemented projects to ensure appropriate levels of care for people with HIV/AIDS, especially pregnant mothers.  It has also pursued projects that strengthen ties between different sectors of society to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in a co-ordinated way.

RESULT

Thematic Working Group meetings on UNAIDS-funded activities in Thailand.

Strengthened and streamlined collaboration among the RTG, the UN agencies and NGOs.

13 UNAIDS projects were implemented and completed during 2000.

7 new UNAIDS projects were identified and formulated.

Strengthened empowerment of vulnerable groups and capacity building of the local government to deal with vulnerable groups.

Sessions on best practices arranged by the Thematic Working Group to improve platform for networking between the RTG, NGOs and CBO and UN agencies.

Strengthened knowledge of lessons learned and best practices for future activities.

World AIDS Day activities i.e. exhibitions, media events and international panel discussion arranged.

Strengthened awareness and advocacy on HIV/AIDS issues in Thailand.
