Keynote Address by Mr. Luc Stevens, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative for TIJ Public Forum on the Rule of Law and Sustainable Development
The United Nations Resident Coordinator for Thailand, Mr. Luc Stevens, spoke this morning at a Thailand Institute of Justice public forum on “The Rule of Law and Sustainable Development” which also served as an opportunity to congratulate Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand as the new UNODC Goodwill Ambassador on the Rule of Law and Criminal Justice for Southeast Asia. Mr. Stevens spoke about the importance of confluence of Rule of Law, Human Rights and Democracy as the core underlying pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals. His remarks highlighted the critical importance of differentiating between Rule of Law versus Rule by Law, particularly in a world where democratic values have come under increasing pressure and where states fall short in meeting obligations as duty bearers of human rights.
